Many people struggle to learn or take in what they are studying, this can be due to a number of reasons:

  • Stress;
  • Anxiety;
  • Lack of concentration ability;
  • Low confidence/self esteem
  • Lack of motivation;
  • Time management;
  • Spreading yourself too far;
  • Poor study habits;
  • Poor memory;
  • Absence of reward;
  • Medicine and drugs; and
  • Fear

These factors make it difficult for people to learn new skills or even reinforce what has already been learnt.  There is a sense of being unable to succeed and make progress through life, in simpler terms “I feel like a failure”.

To obtain an accurate picture of your learning/study problem, examine each of the contributing factors.  Think about which ones may relate to your specific learning experience.

  • When being presented with any learning/study task – make the job easier by organising the task either mentally or on paper. e. Learning carpentry, organise as follows:
    • What are the tools or materials needed;
    • basic procedures to be learned;
    • results desired; and
    • special tips for working effectively, efficiently and quickly.

Think about things in a logical pattern.

It is also often difficult to think of doing anything voluntarily without anticipating some kind of reward, however, small. i.e. if you give a speech you receive applause, or if you run three kilometres each day, the health improves.

If you anticipate the reward at the end of the journey, the resolve to learn or study is reinforced and strengthened.  Construct your own “payoff”.  i.e. Reward the time spent studying by a giving yourself a “treat” or “positive thoughts of a greater income by having the desired knowledge which makes you the “exceptional” candidate for the job”.  The rewards do not have to be anything spectacular, even just praising yourself for doing the best that you can is a special reward in itself.
