For change to occur within us, self-acceptance is considered the prerequisite. It can be achieved by stopping criticizing and beating ourselves up. That is, tolerating and accepting of our imperfections.
So what is Self-Acceptance?
Self-acceptance involves self-understanding, a realistic, albeit subjective, awareness of one's strengths and weaknesses. It results in an individual's feeling about oneself that they are of "unique worth".
Through the centuries massage has been used, and it has been shown to have many benefits for body and mind, it is still used today for the very same reasons. Massage is used to heal and to nurture. It improves circulation, immune function, muscle tone, mental and physical health. Massage can be a part of your health maintenance program, a time to nurture yourself, time out to relax and allow the body to heal. It reconnects Mind and Body.
There are many studies to show that massage helps to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, relief of digestive disorders, nerve pain, headache, chronic pain and insomnia to name a few. I also offer Manual Lymphatic Drainage, which uses specific techniques to help relieve inflammation, help the body to detox, relax, reduce chronic pain, inflammation and reduce healing time post-surgery or injury. It can be part of a decongestive therapy plan for Lymphoedema or Lipodema.
A review study on massage found that levels of the stress hormone cortisol dropped 31% following a massage while levels of feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin increased roughly 30%. That’s why it feels so good and you feel relaxed after a treatment. In fact, pain reduction—along with depression relief—is one of the benefits that research has most consistently linked to massage, says Tiffany Field, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami.
“Pressure receptors under the skin, when stimulated, increase vagal activity,” she says, referring to the vagus nerve, a major component of the human nervous system that plays a role in autonomic functions like heart rate, breathing and digestion.Increased activity in the vagus nerve could have—among other benefits—a meditation-like calming effect, which would explain the drop in cortisol and other stress-related symptoms.
So next time your having a massage be mindful of the behind the scenes work of the body to help you feel relaxed, for tension to be eased, where healing can take place.
