What to Expect from Counselling

During the first consultations Jane will generally start with a discussion about what is happening in your life and the issues that have brought you to counselling. You may also be asked for a brief background of your life. This information is helpful in clarifying counselling goals and developing strategies and approaches to work towards your goals in the future sessions. If the reason for your first attendance is due to such experiences as overwhelming emotional distress or physical pain, the session will focus on addressing your immediate needs. At times you may wish to involve family members or close friends in these sessions.

Some of the therapies used by Jane are:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps you develop skills in managing your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.  CBT may be used to treat problems including anxiety, depression, phobias, low self-esteem, uncontrollable anger, substance abuse, eating disorders and other problems.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy that research shows is an effective treatment of trauma including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is also effective in treating other mental health issues.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) a mindfulness-based behaviour to help manage and maximise your potential of building a meaningful life. Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moments without judgement. Mindfulness techniques help develop awareness about yourself and your environment, relaxation and peace. Mindfulness Solution Focused Hypnosis helps resolve past issues that interfere with personal progress.

Strength and Solution Focused Therapy helps identify your strengths and develop goals to work towards desired outcomes.

Schema Therapy is used to identify underlying beliefs that have an impact on your thoughts and decision making, interpersonal interactions and relationships, emotional responses and action.

You do not require a referral to see a psychologist as a private client. However, if you wish to claim rebates through Medicare you will need to visit your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and a referral to Jane Reynolds at the Geelong Bodi and Mind. You must be referred by your GP, your psychiatrist or paediatrician. Your GP will need to complete a detailed mental health assessment and prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan before referring you to a psychologist.
